Eversource Energy, which operates New England’s largest energy delivery system, has sold its 50 percent ownership share in the 924-megawatt Sunrise Wind project to Ørsted for approximately $230 million.
Sunrise Wind is an offshore wind farm being built at least 30 miles east of Long Island’s Montauk Point in New York. It will produce enough offshore wind energy to power nearly 600,000 homes when it reaches operations in 2026.
Eversource, in January, agreed to sell its interest in Sunrise Wind to Ørsted, depending on the project’s successful award under the fourth New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) solicitation for Offshore Wind Renewable Energy Certificates, among other things. Sunrise Wind was subsequently awarded a contract by NYSERDA, which was finalized and completed on May 31. In June, the sale was approved by both the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and the New York State Public Service Commission.
