Zenobē has announced that Europe’s largest battery storage site at Blackhillock, Scotland, is now officially operational.
The landmark project has a total capacity of 300 megawatts/600 megawatt-hours, the equivalent of powering 3.1 million homes for one hour. The first 200-megawatt phase is now live, with an additional 100 megawatts to follow in 2026.
Blackhillock is strategically located between the Scottish cities of Inverness and Aberdeen to address grid congestion from the Viking, Moray East and Beatrice wind farms.
The site is also the first in the world to provide stability services to the National Energy System Operator (NESO). Wärtsilä is supplying its Quantum energy storage system technology and GEMS Digital Energy Platform with SMA grid-forming inverters to enable a resilient power system with high power quality.
