Equinix, a global colocation and interconnection company, is investing $70 million in the first phase of its eleventh data center development in Tokyo, Japan.

The company also operates two data centers in Osaka. Phase one of the project, called TY11, consists of 950 cabinets spanning 39,8000 square feet of colocation space, media sources reported Tuesday.

Upon completion, it will be the largest data center facility in Japan, housing a total of 3,500 cabinets across 153,800 square feet.

The site is also equipped with various safety features in the event of a disaster, and it is earthquake-resistant.

The new site furthers the company’s goal to increase its global footprint, according to Equinix. The company has not revealed a timeline for the project’s conclusion.

Equinix said Asia Pacific is a highly strategic and thriving market for the company, due to a burgeoning digital market, which is driving demand for interconnection and data center services.
