EllisDon Infrastructure Healthcare MGH Inc. has reached financial close for phase 1-New Patient Care Tower Project at Michael Garron Hospital (formerly Toronto East General Hospital) located in Toronto’s East end.
Following an RFP process, EllisDon was awarded a fixed-rate contract by Infrastructure Ontario (IO) and Michael Garron Hospital (MGH) to design, build and finance the hospital’s redevelopment. The project, valued at $411 million, will be delivered under IO’s Alternative Financing and Procurement (AFP) model.
“This is a milestone project for Michael Garron Hospital, and EllisDon Infrastructure Healthcare MGH Inc. is excited to help deliver the improved patient care to the Toronto East community through a modernized facility that will match the quality care and services provided by physicians and staff,” said Joey Comeau, senior vice president at EllisDon Capital.
The project will improve the delivery of efficient, accessible and high-quality patient care, while replacing some of the hospital’s oldest spaces. This will also mark the hospital’s first major renewal since it first opened in 1929. The project will involve the construction of a new eight-story patient care tower and three-story connection, as well as demolition of some existing space and renovations to the existing hospital. In total, approximately 550,000 square feet of MGH will be redeveloped, and 100,000 square feet of existing hospital areas will undergo renovations.
Construction will begin immediately and substantial completion is slated for September 2023.
