EIG-backed Fidra Energy secures funding for the U.K.’s largest BESS project

Fidra Energy, a European battery energy storage system (BESS) platform owned by EIG, has secured up to £445 million ($603 million) of new equity investment from EIG and the National Wealth Fund.

With that, Fidra Energy has reached financial close on the United Kingdom’s largest BESS project, located at its Thorpe Marsh site in Doncaster, South Yorkshire.

Thorpe Marsh represents the largest standalone BESS project financed globally and the largest BESS financing in Europe. In addition to the investment by EIG and the NWF, it will be funded by £594 million ($805 million) of new loan facilities from a club of international lenders.

The 1,400-megawatt/3,100-megawatt-hour project, which is expected to be operational starting in mid-2027, will be among the largest battery-storage facilities in Europe.
