Duke Energy Renewables has broken ground on a 350-megawatt wind power expansion project in Kay County, Okla., media sources reported July 30.
Duke Energy Renewables has signed a 15-year virtual power purchase agreement with Ball Corp. for 161 megawatts of the extension, and another company signed a virtual power purchase agreement for another 160 megawatts.
Upon completion in December 2020, the expansion of Frontier Windpower, which currently produces enough emissions-free electricity to power around 60,000 homes, will be the company’s largest wind power project in its fleet.
On its own, the 350-megawatt Frontier Windpower II project will generate enough to power 123,000 homes. Together with the existing facility, a total of 550 megawatts of wind energy will be generated, powering 193,000 homes.
Duke Energy enlisted Nordex Group to supply 74 4.8-megawatt turbines for the site.
The original 200-megawatt Frontier Windpower facility was Duke’s first wind project in Oklahoma. It comprises 3.3-megawatt turbines and the largest Vestas blades in the United States.
