In March 2024, the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore fatefully collapsed into the Patapsco River, shining a spotlight on the critical need for infrastructure modernization in the United States.
In recent months, a new design concept for the bridge’s rebuild has been unveiled. According to Maryland Gov. Wes Moore, the new bridge will honor the architectural tradition of the original bridge and will be Maryland’s first highway cable-stayed bridge, constructed according to the most advanced industry standards and best infrastructure design practices.
While the previous bridge was approximately 1.7 miles, the new bridge will stretch more than 2 miles, according to the Maryland Transportation Authority, and has an expected lifespan of 100 years.
The new bridge is expected to be opened on Oct. 15, 2028.
