A Bristol Airport expansion project has been shut down by councilors citing harm to the environment, according to several U.K. news sources. Bristol Airport is the commercial airport serving the city of Bristol, England, and is owned by the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan.
The expansion plan was designed to raise the cap on passengers from 10 million to 12 million in a 12-month calendar period. The proposed development included new infrastructure, improvements to existing facilities and operational changes to help the airport meet traveler demand, according to a planning application.
BBC reported that the application garnered an overwhelming number of objections from members of the public (8,800 and received only 2,400 messages of support. Councilors ultimately rejected the expansion by 18 votes to seven, according to The Guardian.
