Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners announces €270m investment in Scottish battery storage project

Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) has announced a final investment decision (FID) for Kilmarnock South, a 350-megawatt/1,400-megawatt-hour lithium-ion battery energy storage system (BESS) located in South Ayrshire, southern Scotland.

The project represents an investment commitment of more than €270 million ($305 million), CIP confirmed.

At four hours of duration, Kilmarnock South will be the longest-duration asset in CIP’s U.K. storage portfolio after it becomes operational. The battery will store surplus Scottish wind power that would otherwise go unused and release it to the grid when the network has capacity. Construction on Kilmarnock South is now under way, with commercial operations expected in the first quarter of 2028.
