Commerz Real has acquired an agrivoltaic project from Elysium Solar, a joint venture between Zurich’s EIC Partners from Germany’s LBD-Beratungsgesellschaft — two advisory firms that specialize in the energy market. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Agrivoltaics describes the simultaneous use of agricultural areas with photovoltaic plants. Solar modules mounted on stilts capture the sunlight while allowing fruit or vegetables to grow underneath the solar arrays. They can also shield harvests from weather phenomena such as hail and excessive solar radiation. Advocates of the technology argue that especially in densely populated countries such as Germany, new areas could thus be developed for renewable-energy generation.
The agrivoltaic park, located near Berlin, is expected to commence operations in 2025 and have a nominal output of around 50 megawatts, producing enough electricity to cover the average annual consumption of the equivalent of 19,000 German househo
