CIP and GreenIT to deliver 750MW of offshore wind

by Kali Persall

A fund managed by Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) and GreenIT, a joint venture between Plenitude and CDP Equity, have agreed to develop two floating offshore wind farms near the Mediterranean islands of Sicily and Sardinia.

The projects, which are located more than 35 kilometers (22 miles) off the coast, have a total capacity of 750 megawatts. The Sicily project will be sited off the coast of Marsala and have a total capacity of around 250 megawatts; while the second project, located off the southwestern coast of Sardinia, will have more than 500 megawatts of capacity.

The two wind farms will produce more than 2,000 gigawatt hours per year, the equivalent of the average annual energy consumption of 750,000 households in the involved areas.

The initiative will prevent around 1 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per year, contributing to the decarbonization objectives of the 2030 National Integrated Energy. Operations are scheduled to begin in 202
