Chile looks to award $796m contract for anticipated highway project

by Kali Persall

Chile is looking to award a second concession contract for a $796 million highway project, according to InfraPPP.

The Ministry of Public Works in Chile launched tenders in search of a private developer to develop a 195-kilometer (121-mile) Highway 5 route, which crosses through a number of provinces and communes.

Under the 25-year contract, the concessionaire also will be responsible for replacing old bridges and building service streets, walkways and structures such as bridges, railroad crossings, links, returns, crossings, as well as a number of other infrastructure projects. The project also will incorporate a bypass with a 54-kilometer (33.5-mile) expansion of third lanes in the area between San Carlos and Chillán Viejo, as well as a collection system through electronic toll gates throughout the route.

The project has been called the most anticipated road concession in the country due to the high traffic congestion in the area.
