CEO of Adani Enterprises to step down as controversial coal project chugs on

Lucas Dow, Australian CEO of Adani Enterprises is planning to step down from his position after two years, Reuters reported July 10.

The role will be filled by current project director David Boshoff, following Dow’s leave.

His decision comes as a controversial coal project headed by Adani in the Australian state of Queensland faces declining coal prices and opposition surrounding climate change issues. The project, known as the Carmichael mine, is located in Queensland's Galilee Basin about 400 kilometers (248 miles) inland from the east coast.

Carmichael mine is expected to be the biggest mine in Australia and possibly the world, according to Rolling Stone. But the A$2 billion ($1.4 billion) project has drawn opposition from environmentalists who fear it could harm the ecosystem of the nearby Great Barrier Reef. Environmentalists also worry it could lead to the approval of six other mines in the area, reported BBC.
