Cash, infrastructure and emerging markets are leading allocation plans amid volatility

Many of the world’s largest asset owners are making significant changes to their portfolios in response to geopolitical uncertainty, persistent inflation and an evolving investment opportunity set.

In its recently released 2026 Global Asset Owner Barometer, Marsh, a global professional services firm, reports 48 percent of asset owners surveyed have adjusted their geographic positioning during the past 12 months, while 37 percent reduced overall portfolio risk, and 37 percent also increased liquidity or cash holdings.

The 430 asset owners surveyed represent a combined $5.76 trillion under management. The sample included institutional investors (pension funds, insurers, sovereign wealth funds, endowments and foundations) and wealth managers (wealth managers, private banks and family offices), based across 25 countries throughout North America, Europe, the Middle East and Asia Pacific.
