CapitaLand Ascendas REIT acquires hyperscale data center in Japan for $484.9m

CLAR has entered Japan through the acquisition of a 49 percent interest in a Tier III hyperscale data center in Greater Osaka for a purchase consideration of S$620.7 million ($485 million). The remaining interest in the data center is held by a fund managed by Mitsui & Co. Realty Management, a subsidiary of Japan’s leading conglomerate Mitsui & Co.

While remaining anchored in Singapore, CLAR is scaling and diversifying its global data center portfolio into a new developed market with healthy fundamentals. Its maiden entry into Japan with a Tier III hyperscale data center in Osaka exemplifies this focus. Japan is the largest data center market among developed countries in Asia Pacific (APAC), and its IT capacity (including operational and under-development capacities) is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 24 percent to reach 2.8 gigawatts by 2030 driven by artificial intelligence (AI)-related investments from major international and local hyperscale
