Capital Dynamics snaps up 170MW battery energy storage project in Ireland

by Kali Arevalo

Capital Dynamics, a global private asset management firm, has acquired a ready-to-build battery energy storage system project located in Knockanure, Ireland, from a group of private shareholders. Financial terms were not disclosed.

The project has secured grid connection capacity of 170 megawatts at the neighboring 110-kilovolt Knockanure substation and will be among the first to be delivered in the Republic of Ireland as a long-duration energy storage solution (LDES), as classified by EirGrid.

The project secured planning consent in October 2025, and work has started on procurement and delivery planning.

With a significant share of the country’s electricity produced by renewables, additional flexibility will be required to support a grid that is already experiencing rising curtailment rates. According to Capital Dynamics, LDES projects represent an essential part of the Republic of Ireland’s energy security and grid flexibility.
