Australian data center growth and energy transition at a crossroads

Australia’s data center expansion is occurring at a rapid rate, which is adding complexity to the country’s energy transition goals, according to Fitch Ratings.

The demand for energy from data centers is offsetting the progress made my environmental initiatives. While federal and state government initiatives and policies are pushing for a low carbon economy, data centers require immense amounts of power, electricity and water. To meet desired sustainability goals, the pace of deployment for said initiatives would need to rapidly accelerate, notes Fitch.

Given the increased demand for data centers, grid competition, renewable energy supply and capital is expected to tighten. AEMO’s Draft 2026 Integrated System Plan estimates that grid consumption is expected to grow from the current 133 terawatt hours to 253 terawatt hours by 2050, with data centers accounting for 29 terawatt hours of the increase.
