Atlas and DNB Markets to finance Chilean solar plants with new green bond

by Kali Persall

Atlas Renewable Energy and DNB Markets have issued a $253 million U.S. private placement (USPP) in the form of a green bond, which will be used to refinance and build two solar photovoltaic (PV) plants in Northern Chile.

The bond was issued under Atlas Renewable Energy’s Green Finance Framework. The transaction marks the largest solar PV green USPP issuance in Latin America and the second by Atlas.

The two solar PV generation assets are located in the Atacama and Antofagasta regions in the northern part of the country and have a total installed capacity of 314 megawatts. Javiera (in Atacama) is a 70-megawatt fully operational asset, and Sol del Desierto (in Antofagasta) is a 244-megawatt greenfield project currently under development by Atlas Renewable Energy.

Sol del Desierto will use bifacial technology, which collects sunlight from both the front and the rear to increase generation. The plant is expected to start providing clean energy to Engie Energia Chil
