The U.S. Supreme Court has voted to allow a proposed 600-mile natural gas pipeline project to move forward, according to several news reports.
The $7.5 billion Atlantic Coast Pipeline project, which is being jointly developed by Duke Energy and Dominion Energy, was allowed to proceed by the Supreme Court with a 7–2 ruling.
The pipeline is scheduled to run underground from West Virginia to North Carolina, crossing beneath the Appalachian Trail and the George Washington National Forest.
The project has sparked opposition from environmental groups such as the Sierra Club and Southern Environmental Law Center, which have called it “a dirty, dangerous threat to our health, climate and communities,” according to Reuters.
The developers will now look to resolve the remaining project permits.
