Alberta Investment Management pursuing new investment strategy

by Kali Persall

Alberta Investment Management Corp. (AIMCo), a Canada-based institutional fund manager, is taking a new approach to its real assets investment strategy, Bloomberg reports.

Rather than buying into existing projects or ones under development, AIMCo is investing in companies with strong existing assets and teams that can build on those platforms.

It’s a strategy AIMCo’s CEO Kevin Uebelein calls “platform investing,” and he believes it will help maximize returns on the firm’s investments.

"There are too many dollars chasing too few projects,” Uebelein told Bloomberg. “That’s one of the reasons why doing things like platform investing is where we’re going to find the opportunity to create greater returns and generate better value.”

AIMCo is reportedly seeking real assets such as office buildings, timberland and wind-power installations.

The firm has $103.7 billion of assets under management, according to its website.
