Akiem closes purchase of Macquarie’s locomotive leasing business

by Kali Persall

Akiem Group, one of the largest providers of locomotive leasing and related services in Europe, has closed its acquisition of Macquarie European Rail’s rolling-stock leasing business. Financial terms were not disclosed.

The transaction involves 137 locomotives operated by 21 freight and passenger rail operators in Europe and the United Kingdom, 30 electric multiple-unit trains leased to the Greater Anglia franchise in the United Kingdom, 16 diesel multiple-unit trains leased to a Dutch franchise, and 110 wagons.

The companies signed a definitive agreement for the deal in late February.

Akiem now owns a diversified portfolio of more than 600 locomotives operated by 65 customers in Europe and the United Kingdom. With the latest acquisition, Akiem owns the biggest fleet in Europe.
