The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) is spending $112 million to improve transport and water services in Karachi, Pakistan, bringing the financial institution’s commitments in the country to $512 million.
The AIIB has earmarked $71.8 million for the Karachi Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project, which will establish a public transport system in Pakistan’s economic hub. The project includes the construction of the Karachi Red Line BRT Corridor and associated facilities, as well as the establishment of BRT operations.
The project is expected to improve the city’s air quality and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
The bank also approved a $40 million loan to upgrade the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board’s (KWSB) efficiency and sustainability. KWSB provides Karachi with 650 million gallons of water per day, which is only about half of the city’s total needs. Once fully operational, roughly 2 million residents will benefit from reduced water losses.
