$10t of projected infrastructure developments demands growing amounts of skilled labor

The United States is at the cusp of a major infrastructure opportunity, with the need for roughly $10 trillion in development of artificial intelligence and traditional infrastructure, according to a BlackRock research report, “Building America: investing in infrastructure and the workforce.”

With the opportunity for $10 trillion in infrastructure investments, the demand for jobs in skilled trades has grown significantly, cannot be replaced by automation and are projected to outpace overall U.S. workforce growth. However, training capacity lags and must catch up to the rising demand.

“Infrastructure is not just about physical capital: it also requires human capital,” notes the report.

To meet this need, apprenticeships, earn-and-learn pathways and internships are attractive ways to learn necessary skills while enhancing professionalism in the growing workforce. Governments, employers and educators are collaborating to meet the evolving needs of the labor
