Nuveen expands clean energy offering in Italy

Nuveen has closed on a series of critical acquisitions on behalf of its Clean Energy Strategy in an effort to drive the next phase of renewable-energy development in Southern Europe. The firm is seeking to develop 3 gigawatts of renewable energy in the region through its wholly owned power producer Verdian.

Through Verdian, Nuveen acquired an onshore wind portfolio with a total capacity of up to 493.2 megawatts and integrated storage systems totaling 144 megawatts developed by Gruppo Hope, an Italian renewable-energy developer. The portfolio includes six projects located in the Italian regions of Latium, Apulia and Tuscany.

Nuveen also has acquired three battery storage assets with a cumulative capacity of 280 megawatts. They include a 90-megawatt stand-alone battery storage (BESS) project in Campania, Italy, which will represent one of Europe’s first eight-hour duration BESS projects after it is constructed and commissioned.
