Social infrastructure: It’s all about the people

No one denies the importance of social infrastructure. Communities could not function without schools, healthcare facilities, affordable housing options and other people-focused assets. If nothing else, the COVID pandemic highlighted the fragile position of many social entities, as hospitals, care homes and schools reached a breaking point. Yet, investment in new stock and maintaining old is sorely lacking. According to Francois Bergere, executive director of the Long-Term Infrastructure Investors Association (LTIIA), “The current situation is likely to worsen, with future needs linked to big demographic and societal trends at play. As for the public sector, which has accounted for 95 percent of total social infrastructure investment in Europe over the last five years) — its capacity to provide appropriate levels of financing is at risk in view of increasing public debt and deficit issues in many countries.” This report was focused on Europe, but the situation is the same for
