Atlas Renewable Energy has brought one of the largest solar plants in Chile online.
With a total capacity of 244 megawatts and 582,930 solar panels spread over 479 hectares (1,183 acres), the Sol del Desierto plant is expected to generate 714 gigawatt-hours annually and avoid 368 thousand tons of carbon dioxide per year.
The project has a long-term solar power purchase agreement (PPA) between Atlas Renewable Energy and Engie Energía Chile, which unlocks the supply of 550 gigawatt-hours per year of solar photovoltaic energy for a period of 15 years. Atlas said the solar project is an important part of Chile’s Ministry of Energy’s decarbonization plan, which seeks to retire and/or convert half of the coal-fired power plants by 2025.
