Uniper seeks approval for national hydrogen hub in Germany

Uniper is planning to establish a national hub for hydrogen in Wilhelmshaven, Germany, as part of a plan to create a common European hydrogen market.

The aim is to produce around 2 million metric tons of green crude iron, using hydrogen generated through wind power.

Uniper submitted plans for the project, known as Green Wilhelmshaven, to the German Federal Ministry of Economics several weeks ago and is now working on a corresponding feasibility study.

The project will include an import terminal for green ammonia, which would be equipped with an “ammonia cracker” for producing green hydrogen and be connected to the planned hydrogen network. A 410-megawatt electrolysis plant is also planned, which — in combination with the import terminal — would be capable of supplying around 295,000 metric tons or 10 percent of the demand expected for the entirety of Germany in 2030.
