Transnet has awarded the Southern Palace Joint Venture Consortium the concession to develop a R2.5 billion ($169 million) Tambo Springs Intermodal Terminal project in Gauteng, South Africa.
The consortium, comprised of Southern Palace, Farrovie dello Stato Italiane, and Makoya, will design, finance, construct, operate and maintain the project over a period of 20 years.
India-based cargo transportation company Concor, American engineering firm AECOM and Italian consulting company Italferr will also support the consortium. The city of Ekurhuleni will provide major bulk services for the development.
Gauteng, an economic hub in South Africa, handles approximately 60 percent of the country’s import and export goods. The project will span 607 hectares (1,500 acres) and will utilize existing rail infrastructure. Upon completion the terminal will connect major road and rail networks linking strategic seaports.
The terminal is expected to be fully operational between 2022 and 2023.
