Montreal launches $6.3b light rail transit infrastructure project

CDPQ Infra and partners have officially launched a $6.3 billion infrastructure project to build a light rail transit system, Réseau Express Métropolitain (REM).

REM will link downtown Montréal, the South Shore, the West Island (Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue), the North Shore (Laval and Deux-Montagnes) and the airport through an entirely automated and electric light rail transit system.

SNC Lavalin Grands Projets is the engineering firm that has been awarded the contract for engineering, procurement and infrastructure construction for the project. Other partners include Dragados Canada, Groupe Aecon Québec Ltée, Pomerleau and EBC. Two participants will join the team: SNC Lavalin inc. and Aecom consultants.

It is being billed as the largest public transportation project in the Montreal area in the last 50 years

And when the 42-mile network will be the fourth largest automated light-rail transit line in the world after Singapore, Dubai and Vancouver, according to The Globe and Mail.

Construction will start in April and first riders will begin boarding in the summer of 2021.
