Baltimore Key Bridge collapse sparks concerns about America’s aging infrastructure

In the early morning hours on March 26, the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, America’s 15th-largest port, collapsed into the Patapsco River. Although hundreds of large cargo and tanker ships safely pass under the bridge each month, squeezing through the narrow channel, this was not the case on that fateful March morning. A 985-foot-long container ship — Dali — lost power and lost course, knocking out one of the bridge’s vertical support piers, and ultimately, crumbling it.

In the wake of the incident, engineering and infrastructure experts have emphasized the critical need for bridge modernization in the United States.
