Winning bidder emerges for Quito Metro rail mass-transit system in Ecuador

by Kali Persall

A bidder was selected to continue to the pre-contractual phase for the operation of the Quito Metro (MDQ), an underground rail mass-transit system under construction in Ecuador’s capital of Quito.

The winning bidder is a consortium consisting of Metro de Medellín-Colombia and Transdev of France.

“After 12 years of waiting, we are experiencing a historic milestone because for the first time we have a selected bidder fulfilling a technical roadmap that was scheduled from November 2021,” said Efrain Bastidas, manager of the Quito Metro Metropolitan Company (EPMMQ).

The selection process for the operating company of the Quito Metro began at the end of March, with the publication of the specifications of the process and the official invitation to the international railway companies that showed interest in participating. By late June, EPMMQ had received two offers for the selection process: the Metro de Medellín / Transdev Group consortium and Sao Paulo Metro.
