Sembcorp delivers largest energy-storage system in Southeast Asia

Sembcorp Industries and the Energy Market Authority (EMA) have opened Southeast Asia’s largest energy-storage system (ESS) on Jurong Island, Singapore.

The Sembcorp Energy Storage System spans 2 hectares (5 acres) of land in the Banyan and Sakra region on Jurong Island. The facility was commissioned in six months and began operations in December 2022. It is the fastest of its size to be deployed in the world, according to Sembcorp.

The utility-scale ESS has a maximum storage capacity of 285 megawatt hours and can meet the electricity needs of about 24,000 four-room HDB households for one day in a single discharge. It also can provide reserves to the power grid, which frees up power plants to generate more electricity to meet demand when needed.
