Queensland signs hydrogen export agreement with the Port of Rotterdam

by Kali Persall

Queensland, Australia, could soon be exporting hydrogen to Europe’s largest port after the Palaszczuk government agreed to terms of a memorandum of understanding with the Port of Rotterdam in the Netherlands.

The agreement would see Queensland and the Port of Rotterdam develop a hydrogen export supply chain between Queensland hydrogen producers and Rotterdam. Over the coming weeks, the Palaszczuk government and the Port of Rotterdam will work to finalize the agreement ahead of the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 26), scheduled to take place in Scotland between Oct. 31 and Nov. 12.

The Port of Rotterdam has a goal of importing up to 20 million tonnes of hydrogen by 2050, beginning with imports of ammonia in 2025.

“This is the start of the green industrial revolution, and the announcements this week prove that Queensland has what it takes to be a global leader in renewable energy and hydrogen,” said Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk.
