Northern Data buys renewable-powered data center in Northern Sweden

Northern Data has acquired a data center facility, consisting of six data center halls spanning 2.5 hectares (6.1 acres), in Northern Sweden.

The new site is located in the Swedish city of Boden, which has an average annual temperature of 1.3 degrees celsius due to its close proximity to the Arctic Circle, making the location ideal for passive energy-saving cooling of the hardware.

The region of Northern Sweden is also characterized by high connectivity and very cheap regional surplus electricity from renewable-energy sources, according to Northern Data. The electricity for Northern Data’s new site is 100 percent sourced from renewable energy, generated by hydropower plants in the region that have a capacity of about 4.5 gigawatts.

Following the acquisition, Northern Data said it will instantly start allocating hardware due to the high demand from its customers and will continue to massively expand the site immediately.
