KKR-owned John Laing buys Aware Super’s stake in Sydney Light Rail network, increases ownership to 95%

KKR-owned infrastructure investor John Laing is increasing its total ownership in the Sydney Light Rail network to a 95 percent majority stake through the acquisition of Aware Super’s 62.5 percent interest in the public-private partnership (P3) that operates the network.

John Laing is part of the ALTRAC Light Rail Partnership, which delivered and now operates SLR on behalf of the New South Wales Government. John Laing has been actively involved in the project since commencement in 2014, from initial construction through to the management of the mass transport system it has grown to be.

SLR is a vital component of Sydney’s public transport system, helping to ease traffic congestion and reduce vehicle emissions, with each light rail vehicle able to carry up to 450 passengers — the equivalent of nine buses. More than 40 million trips per year are taken on this network.
