Infratil to take stake in U.K.’s Kao Data

by Kali Persall

Infratil has agreed to invest up to £120 million to £130 million ($162 million to $176 million) in Kao Data, a U.K. developer and operator of advanced data centers.

Kao Data owns a 15-acre data center campus, located in the U.K. Innovation Corridor, one of the country’s fastest-growing economic regions between London and Cambridge, England. The campus was built on the site of Sir Charles Kao’s discovery of the fiber optic cable in 1966. Once fully operational, the campus will house four energy-efficient data centers, all powered by 100 percent renewable energy.

Construction of its second building is slated for later this financial year.

Kao Data recently signed an agreement to acquire two U.K. data centers with a long-term anchor lease from a large financial services business — a transaction that will enable Kao Data to expand its potential capacity to 55 megawatts.

Infratil's initial investment will fund this growth and give Infratil a 40 percent
