Illinois State Universities commits $50m to Ember Infrastructure Fund II

by Lewis Dayton

The State Universities Retirement System of Illinois (SURS Illinois) has committed $50 million to Ember Infrastructure Fund II (EIF II).

Managed by Ember Infrastructure, EIF II will invest in infrastructure projects that reduce carbon intensity, increase resource efficiency and enhance climate resilience.

SURS Illinois has an existing relationship with Ember Infrastructure, having committed $50 million to Ember Infrastructure Fund I in 2021.

As of June 30, 2023, 0.7 percent ($166.2 million) of SURS Illinois’ $23.1 billion portfolio was allocated toward core infrastructure. For the fiscal year that ended June 30, core infrastructure investments for SURS Illinois generated a return of 10.1 percent.

As of December 2023, SURS Illinois had a $2.5 billion non-core real assets portfolio.
