by Kali Persall

The Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) has invited developers and developer consortiums to participate in the development of a reverse osmosis (RO) independent water project (IWP) in Abu Dhabi Islands, UAE.

The project involves the development, financing, construction, operation, maintenance and ownership of two standalone greenfield, reverse-osmosis, seawater-desalination plants that will desalinate seawater using low-carbon intensive RO technologies according to InfraPPP. They will provide a combined total of 100 million imperial gallons per day.

The chosen developer or developer consortium will own up to 40 percent of a special-purpose vehicle (SPV), while the remaining equity primarily will be held indirectly by the Abu Dhabi Government, according to Utilities. The SPV will enter into a long-term water purchase agreement with EWEC, the single buyer of power and water capacity and output in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.
