Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) has partnered with Enagás, Naturgy, Fertiberia and Vestas to build a project for the large-scale production of green hydrogen and ammonia in Spain.

The undertaking, dubbed Project Catalina, will involve the development of 5 gigawatts of combined wind and solar in Spain and will produce green hydrogen through a 2-gigawatt electrolyzer. Once fully implemented, Catalina will produce enough green hydrogen to supply 30 percent of Spain’s current hydrogen demand and is expected to save up to 1 million tons of carbon dioxide each year.

Phase one of the project is currently in an advanced development stage and is expected to be fully developed and permitted in less than two years. Construction is planned to start at the end of 2023.

The green ammonia will be upgraded into green, sustainable fertilizers within Fertiberia’s existing assets at Sagunto. The hydrogen produced will also be used for the decarbonization of other in
