The California Public Employees’ Pension Retirement System (CalPERS) has appointed Nicole Musicco as its new CIO, following an international search and extensive recruitment process.
CalPERS said Musicco is only the second woman to lead the investment operations for the nation’s largest public pension fund, with nearly $500 billion in assets. She will begin on March 28 and lead a team of more than 300 investment professionals.
Musicco joins CalPERS from RedBird Capital Partners, where she led the firm’s Canadian investment business. She previously managed the private markets investment program at the Investment Management Corp. of Ontario.
Musicco also spent 16 years with the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan, leading both the private equity and public equity investment teams. She opened the fund’s Asia Pacific office in Hong Kong and helped build its presence in Asia.
