Brazil saw an increase of 5.1 gigawatts of installed capacity for generating electricity during the first half of 2023, with renewable sources accounting for 83.64 percent of the 193.9 gigawatts in operation in the country.
Brazil’s National Electric Energy Agency (ANEEL) said this growth, which was achieved in six months, represents nearly half of its 10.3-gigawatt growth target for 2023.
Of the 160 plants that went into commercial operation from January to June, 67 are wind powered, generating 2.3 gigawatts; 59 are photovoltaic solar, generating 2.2 gigawatts; 23 are thermoelectric plants, with 521.4 megawatts; eight are small hydroelectric plants, with 121.5 megawatts; and three are hydroelectric-power stations, with 11.4 megawatts.
In June, 538.1 megawatts were added to the Brazilian electrical matrix, of which 239.4 megawatts were installed in Rio Grande do Norte. In the first half of 2023, 18 states from the five regions of the country gained new plants.
