Australia’s largest wind farm breaks ground

by Kali Persall

ACCIONA Energía announced May 9 that construction on the largest wind farm in Australia is under way.

The MacIntyre complex has a total capacity of 1,026 megawatts and consists of two wind farms — the 923-megawatt MacIntyre wind farm, which is owned by ACCIONA Energía and Ark Energy and where the construction works have kicked off; and Karara, owned by Queensland’s public utility CleanCo.

Construction of the MacIntyre complex, which ACCIONA Energía is leading, is expected to be completed in 2024 and will generate clean electricity to supply nearly 700,000 homes and avoid 3 million tons of carbon-dioxide emissions each year.

The project involves an associated investment of A$2 billion ($1.4 billion).
