Another Colorado city to adopt 100% clean renewable energy supply policy

by Andrea Zander

The City Council of Longmont, Colo., has adopted a 100 percent clean renewable energy supply policy.

Longmont aims to have 50 percent of its residents’ and businesses’ electricity generated from carbon-free sources by the year 2022, and 100 percent generated from renewable sources such as wind and solar by the year 2030.

Other Colorado cities and towns that already have adopted renewable-energy commitments — some with different dates than the 2030 goal, according to the national Sierra Club’s “Ready for 100” website — are Boulder, Nederland, Lafayette, Pueblo, Breckenridge and Aspen.

Longmont is the 55th city nationally to set the goal.

Longmont is located in the heart of fracking country. Jim Alexee, director of the Colorado Sierra Club, said in a statement, “As one of the most fracked regions in the nation, it’s exciting to see Longmont made the decision to invest in our health and climate.”
