Amazon.com Inc. is planning to purchase half of the energy produced by a new 759-megawatt wind farm in the Netherlands to power its operations in Europe, CNBC reports.
The Amazon-Shell HKN Offshore Wind Project is expected to be Amazon’s largest single-site renewable energy project to date.
In July 2020, the CrossWind Consortium — which is made up of Shell and Eneco — secured the right to build the Amazon-Shell HKN Offshore Wind Project in the North Sea, located 8.5 kilometers (5.3 miles) off the Dutch coast. It covers an area of 125 million square kilometers (48 square miles) and will feature 69 wind turbines from Siemens Gamesa that have a capacity of 11 megawatts.
Under the new agreement, Amazon will purchase more than 380 megawatts of its output.
The offshore wind farm is expected to be operational by 2023.
