Air Liquide and TotalEnergies to produce low-carbon hydrogen at refinery site

by Kali Persall

Air Liquide, a French industrial gases company, and TotalEnergies are planning to produce renewable, low-carbon hydrogen at TotalEnergies’ existing Grandpuits refinery.

In 2020, TotalEnergies announced plans to invest more than €500 million ($514 million) to convert its Grandpuits refinery into a zero-crude platform. Biofuels, bioplastics and plastic waste recycling form the backbone of this project, as part of a strategy to reach net-zero emissions by 2050.

Under the long-term contract, TotalEnergies will purchase the hydrogen produced for the needs of its platform. Air Liquide will invest more than €130 million ($134 million) in the construction and operation of a new unit producing hydrogen. This unit will partly use biogas from the biorefinery built by TotalEnergies and will be delivered with Air Liquide’s carbon capture technology.
