In response to the growing need for a more comprehensive understanding of infrastructure assets’ ESG performance, GRESB has introduced a new ESG standard, developed in collaboration with the industry, specifically tailored for gathering development data.

The Editorial Advisory Board of Institutional Investing in Infrastructure (i3) convened on Nov. 6–8 in San Diego. Prior to the meeting, attendees were asked to share questions they have for each other regarding concerns they are dealing with at their organization and the challenges that keep them up at night. Here are some of the key themes at top of mind for investors, managers and consultants moving into 2024.

Europe has led the way in the rollout of key renewables technologies, and there is now significant scope for the region to again take global leadership across other alternative energy sources and fuels. This presents significant opportunities for investors in most major asset classes, and our report focuses on the opportunity for infrastructure investors.

The most common complaint I hear from CIOs and investment officers around the globe is that they are overwhelmed by the demands on their time. This is true even for those blessed with large staffs — although for most of you, you are also plagued with a lack of sufficient staff resources. Many of you are effectively one-person shows. And some of you are CIOs with no staff at all — you’re running the whole shooting match by yourself.

We ended the second quarter 2023 report on a cautiously optimistic note. We noted that 2023 was posting historically poor capital-raising numbers. However, there are several double-digit billion-dollar funds in the market (five targeting more than $20 billion), all sponsored by large successful managers.
