Report from Europe: Five-year rent freeze in Berlin

Berlin rents have doubled in the past 10 years as new housing construction has failed to keep pace with the city’s rapid population growth. City leaders, concerned that Berlin rents could become as stratospheric as London’s if action is not taken, have decided to halt rent increases effective in January 2020, to the chagrin of landlords and investors.
