A whole new world: Don’t you dare close your eyes

Due to the high costs of funding these plans, as soon as defined contribution (DC) pension fund vehicles started to be introduced in the early 1980s, corporate plan sponsors began to organize DC plans for new employees, while freezing their DB plans from accepting any further participants. According to several sources, more than 95 percent of corporate DB plans are now frozen.

Debt investing: How are returns being made, and what is the leverage structure?

It wasn’t until mid-2024 that I recognized there appears to be a deeper foundational flaw in these discussions: a lack of clearly defined risk profiles for debt investments. Some investors could be considering higher-risk/higher-return distress debt investments, and some could be evaluating debt as more conservative/lower-return lending on cash-flowing assets. Currently, it’s all just “debt.”
