First-ever decarbonisation roadmap for retail sector

A new roadmap document has been published by the Buildings Performance Institute Europe (BPIE) aimed at helping the retail industry reach 2050 net-zero carbon emissions for all its real estate.

Described by BPIE as the first of its kind, the roadmap is the result of over a year of engagement with 14 retail European and global property developers, investors and managers. It provides detailed guidance for the entire retail property value chain to reach net-zero carbon, which includes the property sector, policymakers, commercial tenants, the construction sector, and financial institutions.

Retailers are facing increasing pressure from regulators and the investment community to report upcoming climate risks for their real estate portfolios. Retail real estate investment and management organisations are also increasingly recognising carbon- and climate-related risks, and working on plans as to how to minimise them.
