Adapting to the realities of ESG: The investment world is playing catch-up

For decades, many in industry downplayed the affects of climate change and suggested little could or should be done to mitigate it. But the tempest is out of the teapot now, with Australia’s bushfires and the coronavirus underscoring climate’s relationship to the natural world and the social fabric it is tethered to.

New expectations are sweeping industry into action, and if you manage and consult for institutional investment portfolios, trying to filter the possible from the aspirational is a challenge. Appropriately adjusting the scope of investment mandates to meet the new normal is required, and to do that, investment professionals need good standards and information.

ESG (environment, social and governance) is a decision-making tool that has been available for decades but left on the shelf by most until more recently. It is being dusted off and sped read in more and more board rooms and C-suites as management teams climb a new learning curve.
